How to Raise your Bike Handlebars? – Stem Extender Install

hi I’m Jason today I’m going to be
showing you how to raise your handlebars
on and go by mountain bike hybrid it’s
gonna depend a little bit but you’ll be
able to see pretty quickly if your bike
is gonna work or not with this kind of
fix here so this is showing the stem
extender already installed so what
you’re gonna want to look for is do your
handlebars have this little allen wrench
nut on top of them and are they the kind
where you’ve got these other allen
wrench nuts on the side tightening it
into place
so here’s how things look to start off
your first step is that you want to
remove this original screw here so mine
came with an Allen wrench if not you
might need to find one that’s the right
size and you will just remove that until
it is completely unscrewed and this
little plate is gonna come off with it
now as you look inside there that is
where the new screw is gonna go in once
we have everything attached the second
thing you need to do is release the stem
by unscrewing this screw here and that
screw there and it happens to be the
same size allen wrench in my case that
might not be the case for you but it was
for me it doesn t to come all the way
out just loose enough so that we can
remove a stem from the frame here and I
hope I’m using the right terminology
here if I’m not please forgive me okay
pull up on this once we have it loose
enough not enough
there we go now I’m going to enough to
let this fall here and we’re gonna take
the stem extender which is this here and
it came just like that in the box so
we’ve got a different cap where you can
use the original one if you want this
long old screw and then these different
rings here and another little place to
attach so this is going to attach on to
the frame here where the other one was
and I didn’t realize this but as I was
looking my original one actually also
has little rings there but I wanted even
taller than where it was so I’m gonna
attach that on there and then it doesn’t
matter well it does kind of matter you
want to line this up I’m not gonna
tighten it until I get the handlebars
back on there because it’s easy to get
the wheel not straight with the
handlebars as you’re doing this so we’ll
get that all straight in just a second
so then I’m gonna put this one and just
wake it out back on type of yeah and you
will have to think about this as you’re
deciding how tall of an extension you
want I can still get that to stretch
with my cables but I saw one that was
like a seven inch extension and if that
were the case I would have to do some
more work to get those cables to be the
right place so keep that in mind as well
so I’ve got both those on there neither
one of them is tight as you can see this
one could rotate it doesn’t want to but
it could we want to make sure we get the
wheel straight but we’ll do that in a
second the first thing is now I’ve got a
long shot to get down to that screw you
can’t even really see it so I’m gonna
take the long screw I actually kind of
like
of this original one that came with it
better it’s got my little Bontrager
symbol now this is kind of a fishing
game so I got to find that hole it’s not
that easy you just kind of move around
until you find where that hole is way at
the bottom and obviously if I start
trying to screw in and I’m in it and I
won’t be able to pull it out but if I’m
not then I will still be able to pull
that out let’s see if I got it in I did
now it’s don’t be too surprised this
plate was wanting to slide off as I was
doing this the first time too in fact
that’s why I had gone with the other
little plate you can see there’s a gap
right there but if you just kind of hold
it in place I’m going to do that with
two hands then it will stay in place as
it gets tighter it has a little groove
on the bottom like that focus so it will
it will stay in place once you get it
tight enough but you might have to hold
it in place as you’re tightening it and
you want this one pretty tight on there
so once we’ve got that tight now just
for cosmetic sake I think it looks nice
if these two are lined up with each
other it technically have to be but line
those up and of course to see how
crooked it is right now
make sure the wheels won’t end up so I’m
going to hold that wheel with my foot
kind of tell it straight and then we
will retighten this and this and this
and this so I’m going to start with I’ve
got it pretty straight there start with
these two you want these quite tight as
well
go ahead and tighten that down where
it’s at though I’m not I’m not too
concerned about it but if I had two
hands I could kind of twist it and get
it lined up perfectly underneath the
other one you want that pretty tight you
want to be able to take it off again a
few you need to in the future but can
you tie down all those but that is all
there is to it it’s really a pretty
simple installation there and gives you
in this case two and a half more inches
so that your handlebars are not quite so
low I hope you found this tutorial
helpful if you did I’d appreciate if you
could give me a thumbs up or some
comments below and subscribe to my
channel for more useful tutorials if you
have any questions leave them below of
course and I’ve got a link in the bottom
showing the stem extender that I bought
and you’ll find a bunch more on Amazon
or wherever as well thanks for watching

Bicycle Handlebar Extension FAQ

Handlebar extension for road bike

The handlebar extensions have become a popular option for people who ride their bikes to work, school or just to visit friends. They can be purchased and installed by almost anyone who has basic knowledge of bike mechanics. The extensions are very easy to use and once you have a few in place you will find that your rides are much more fun and much safer. If you want to ride with the added safety of handlebars that extend you will need to get a few extra ones in place.

The process of installing handlebar extensions is very simple. You need to remove the handlebar from your bike and then attach the bar tape to the handlebar as close as possible. You will then want to pull the bar tape tight against the bar and then hold it in place with the clamps that are included with the extension. The clamps are there for a reason and they make sure that the handlebar remains in the bar tight. It is very easy to do and once you have the handlebar fitted it will look like nothing ever happened.

You will notice that the standard bar tape that comes with most bike bars doesn’t even touch the handlebars so you will have to purchase special bar tape. You will have to make sure that you have the correct size bar tape and that it is black in color. If you are using black in color, the standard bar tape won’t be able to cover it up. Once you have put the bar tape on the handlebars, it will be very hard to remove them. The handlebar extension will have to be taken off before you can begin to install the new one. The process is a very easy one but it will give you a very sturdy handlebar that you can use.

Handlebar extension for mountain bike

If you are the proud owner of a mountain bike, then you may have already figured out that attaching a new handlebar extension to it is one of the best things that you can do for your newly purchased machine. Attaching a new bar or extension to a mountain bike is a great way to spruce it up and make it look more sporty, modern and dangerous. These are also great for adding some much needed length to the handlebar and reducing the swaying problems that often occur when riders try to make that wide turns. The following will give you the lowdown on how to do handlebar extensions for mountain bikes.

Before you begin your project, you are going to need to take note of just exactly how your current handlebars are set up, including the height of the stem and the length of the arms. Once you have this information, you can begin shopping around for the best handlebar extension for your mountain bike. Make sure to check out a wide variety of different companies, since you want to be sure that you are getting the right extension for your bike.

When it comes time to put the handlebar extension on, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. First of all, make sure that you are using the proper tools for the job. While you can most likely purchase an extension that you simply thread onto the handlebar end like a typical screwdriver, it is strongly recommended that you use special tighten-on hardware so that the new extension will stay put and work as intended once you get it on. There is nothing worse than having a stuck handlebar extension! Tighten the handlebar-extension as tightly as possible using the proper tools, and be sure to always follow the instructions carefully so that you do not damage your mountain bike.
